Wooden Yachy / Boat Survey

Based in Falmouth we provide bespoke wooden yacht and wooden boat surveys covering Cornwall and the whole of the South West of the UK

Wooden yacht surveys is essential for evaluating the condition and structural integrity of a vessel. Before committing to a comprehensive survey, it could be prudent to conduct a basic check of the structure initially.

This preliminary inspection focuses on identifying material deterioration rot and decay). A visual examination is carried out to detect any evidence of movement in the planking and fastenings, while sounding the hull surfaces with a hammer is employed to reveal areas of potential decay.

To ensure a thorough assessment, it is imperative to attain good access to the hull and frames. With this initial check we aim to provide valuable insights into the overall condition of the wooden yacht, allowing for a more informed decision on the necessity and scope of a ‘full’ or pre-purchase survey as recommended by the YDSA.

The costs associated with repairs for wooden vessels can often surpass the market value of the boat and it is important to gain a clear understanding of the vessel’s condition from the outset.

Our wooden hull surveys aim to reveal issues ensuring that any potential repairs are identified early on. By initiating a comprehensive examination during the initial stages, yacht owners can make informed decisions about the maintenance and preservation of their wooden vessels, ultimately contributing to the longevity and seaworthiness of these unique and timeless crafts.

A wooden yacht or boat survey differs from surveys on GRP or metal vessels due to the unique nature of timber construction. Wooden hulls are more susceptible to rot, fastener corrosion, and structural movement. Our surveyors will assess the condition of planking, frames, caulking, and internal joinery, often using moisture meters and probing tools to detect hidden decay. The survey requires detailed inspection of joints, keel bolts, and traditionally fastened areas. Understanding different timber types and traditional construction methods is essential. Because wood can degrade invisibly, wooden boat surveys are typically more time-intensive, requiring a specialist approach to ensure accuracy and safety.

Yes, we can provide a limited structural inspection tailored to your specific requirements before you begin restoration work or commit to purchasing a wooden boat project. This type of assessment focuses on key structural elements such as frames, planking, keel, and fastenings, helping you understand the scope of any necessary repairs. While it’s not as comprehensive as a full pre-purchase survey, it offers valuable insight into the vessel’s condition and potential risks. We’ll discuss your goals beforehand to determine the level of detail needed, ensuring the inspection is both practical and cost-effective for your intended use or restoration plans.
