About our yacht tonnage surveys
A tonnage survey is an exercise that involves taking precise measurements and carrying out calculations based on a specific formula. This is essential for achieving Part 1 registration with the U.K.’s shipping register for both commercial and pleasure vessels. Falmouth Marine Surveys are qualified to carry out Tonnage registry.
A tonnage registration is a mandatory requirement, and it facilitates Part 1 registration, ensuring compliance with the U.K.’s shipping regulations. Additionally, for unique names and proof of vessel existence, a Part 3 registration can be obtained using a tonnage survey in order to comply with other maritime regulations.
Fees for tonnage surveys are applied on a set scale, and individuals or owners can request this service through a Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA) application.
A yacht tonnage survey is an official measurement of a vessel’s volume, not its weight, used to calculate its gross and net tonnage. This survey is required for vessel registration, particularly under the UK Small Ships Register or for commercial coding. It involves measuring the yacht’s internal volume, including enclosed spaces, to determine its classification. Conducted by an authorised marine surveyor, the tonnage certificate issued is a legal document necessary for registration, compliance with maritime regulations, and in some cases, determining port fees or crew requirements. It is a straightforward process but essential for formalising a vessel’s legal status.
